The Missing Piece of Your Health Journey: Your Mindset

What does it take to live a healthy lifestyle?
Eating well? Yes.
Moving your body? Yes.
Removing toxins? Yes.
Supplements? Most likely, yes.
But there's one area that's seldom talked about, and it's just as vital as the rest: your mindset.
An Honest Confession
For many years of my own health journey, I did a lot of complaining about how I felt. Did it help? Not really.
I'll be upfront: this post may not be the most popular thing I've written. Mindset is where accountability comes in, and if we're honest, most of us don't enjoy being held accountable, especially when things aren't going the way we'd like. When our bodies seem to be “fighting” us, the natural response is to stop and give in.
But giving in isn't the answer. Even when your body feels like it's working against you, there is always hope. And hope has to be at the forefront of your mind and your thoughts.
I fought this battle for years. I was someone who would rather sit in a pessimistic, “woe is me” frame of mind. God pulled me out of that mindset slowly but surely. And to be completely transparent, it's still a daily renewing of my mind.
Taking Thoughts Captive
When thoughts like “My health is never going to change” or “This is just who I am now” enter our minds, we need to take them captive. We get to decide: are we going to believe them, or throw them out the door?
I decided long ago that those thoughts were not going to take up residence in my mind.
During my recovery from heavy metal toxicity, I worked with a naturopathic doctor in Connecticut who helped me tremendously. At our very first session, after reviewing my intake and muscle testing me, she asked me one question:
“What are you willing to do to restore your health?”
My mind was already made up. I answered, “Anything you need me to do.”
She said, “That's all I needed to hear.”
And I did everything she asked, whether it tasted nasty or not.
Please hear my heart here: I'm not sharing this to say, “Look how wonderful I was.” That's not the point at all. I had simply reached a place where my mindset shifted in a big way, and I was determined to do whatever it took to restore my health.
Mindset Is a Constant, Not a One-Time Decision
Let me be very clear about this: mindset has to be a constant.
So ask yourself, what are you filling your mind with to keep it positive?
I had to continually fill my mind with good things in order to stay there. I listened to and watched content that kept me learning and helped me understand my body better. For years, I learned from many different doctors through calls with a company I partnered with two decades ago.
Today, when a health challenge comes up, my first thought isn't “Why me?” It's “What do I need to research or do to bring functional restoration to my body so I can feel better?”
We're bombarded every day with things that throw our bodies out of balance, and that imbalance affects our minds too. That's the gut-brain connection at work. Body and mind are not separate; caring for one means caring for the other.
Where Are You Today?
I'll leave you with a few questions to sit with honestly:
Where are you in your health journey?
What is your mindset toward your health?
Is it mostly negative?
Do you speak negative things about your body?
The way we talk about our bodies is part of our mindset too.
If you answered yes to any of these, I encourage you to find a health practitioner you trust and genuinely like, someone who will walk alongside you on your journey back to health. This person should also be willing to hold you accountable, because that's part of real support.
And in the meantime, speak kind words to yourself. You were created by God for a reason, and He wants you to be healthy.
There is always hope.
