Food Journaling~ how well do you eat?

Have you ever been asked by a doctor, health care professional or a health coach to journal about your food intake? I hadn’t heard about food journaling until I started to see Naturopathic Doctors. I wondered how food journaling could help them understand how to help me figure out my health concerns better. Well, once I started to write down everything that I drank and ate all day for 7 days, my eyes were opened to what I was actually eating! I thought I ate “healthy” until I started to journal. Then…the truth was revealed as to how I really ate.


Food journaling not only helps you to see how you really eat, but it can also help you to eat better as well. When you realize how you are truly eating, hopefully this will set a desire in you to begin to eat cleaner and healthier. If you struggle to know how to eat healthier and cleaner, might I suggest working with a person who helps educate and motivate individuals to make healthier food choices, like a certified health coach.


It can also help you to figure out if you have sensitivities or allergies to specific foods as well. When you write down what you have eaten and the amount, see how your body reacts to it over the next several hours. Did you get bloated, not feel so well, etc? These may be indications that you should avoid these foods. However, if you have been eating mostly junk food and decide to make a positive change by beginning to eating healthier and cleaner foods, you can experience a detox which can effect the body with similar reactions. This is where working with a health care professional who can help you through this is the best course of action.


You can simply use paper, a computer program, or apps that are out there to help you keep track of what you eat and drink. When you journal your food and beverage intake, I would even recommend writing down the brand of food that you have eaten as well. This way the health professional can see what you are eating and drinking and be able to look up the ingredients too. He/she may have a better brand suggestion for you to try if the one you are eating and drinking is not the best quality.


Even though food journaling may sound tedious and time consuming, I do highly recommend taking the time to do it so you can know for sure how well or poorly your eating habits truly are. I am thankful that I took the time to food journal a couple of times in my health journey to see what I was eating and what may have been giving me issues.
